‘Throw back Thursday’

Swimming with Whale Sharks

This week’s Throwback Thursday clip is from Isla de Mujeres in Mexico where we were working 5 years ago on our documentary “The Global Whale Shark Mystery.”

Every summer a short but dramatic food chain occurs. Snapper aggregate to spawn and the whale shark gather to feed on the fishes eggs.

The whale shark are literally everywhere! And intriguingly they are almost exclusively juvenile males.

Whale shark are almost always solitary creatures – aggregations like this are a rare but awesome natural phenomenon.
